Chapter 7 Organizing and Storing

Every time a photograph is taken it uses up storage space.  Then when the same photograph is altered and edited it takes up even more storage space.  The storage on your computer can be easily used up with all those picture files.  And all these files together make it hard to find one picture in the whole mess of files.  On my own computer my files are not organized well.  Some folders are organized by what was on that SD card and not the subject of the photographs.  This makes it hard to find files I need.  On my external hard drive for school I organized my files better.  They are in folders by projects that I was working on.  This is a much easier way to keep them organized.  If I had embedded metadata and keywords then the organizing process would be simpler now.  I could have used a cataloging application.  Instead I have to go through the files on my computer and both of my hard drives individually to organize them.
I think that adding keywords now when I organize my files into folders can help me later when I have even more photographs to keep track of.  Then I can have copies of all my photo files on more than one hard drive.  Right now I unfortunately have some photos in more than one place and others in just one.  But every hard drive has photos that are not anywhere else.  This means that if one hard drive was to fail right now and the pictures on it were lost at least some of them would be completely lost.  I think that I need to take the time to organize and backup all of my files before I lose some of them.
